Y8 STEM Day
Yesterday a group of year 8 students participated in a day of STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Maths) provided by funding won from the IET and delivered by a local company called Cognation and supported by STEM ambassadors from local industry.
Students worked in small teams of 6 to solve a choice of 3 different challenges:
– Making a toy for young kids
– Helping people with a disability
– Making an object to support people in sport.
Students worked hard dividing their teams up into different rolls including finance, design, electrical health and safety , mechanical engineering and project management scoring points for their design teamwork and planning. The end of the day saw the students present their ideas to the group and specialist engineering panel, and facing some difficult questions.
Overall the students learnt many things, with obvious focus on STEM learning and moreover working on, developing and identifying “Soft skills” for life, including teamwork, listening, problem solving working with others.
All of the students involved represented the school in a wholly outstanding way and all gave positive feedback. We hope to be able to bid for funding next year to further these activities.
Many thanks to all the students involved for working so hard!
